aos motor

I recently had the head gaskets replaced on my 1988 F150 302. Although it is running good now , the idle will run from about 500 to 1200 rpm and continue going up & down. The mechanic told me that replacing the aos motor should correct the idle.
I can not find anything in my manuals about an aos motor.
Can anyone tell me what this is?

Thanks
Jim

never hears of aos motor before. IAC is more likely what he was talking about. Sounds to me like it could possibly be a throttle position sensor, in our Fords they have been known to cause the idle to do this. It won't do you any good to throw a new one on either. The TPS must me set with the key in the on position and the engine off to read .98-.99 volt. You can check this by piercing the wires on the TPS with pins and using a voltmeter to check the values. See people all the time buy a new tps, throw it on, then come back to complain it didn't work. Remember the ECM needs to be reset, or it may not "recognize" the new part.
