So I brought my truck in for warranty work and asked the dealer about the chrome on the tailgate logo discoloring. He said it needed to be replaced and it was covered by warranty. Sounded good to me but when I got it back the tech had chipped the paint in 2 places and dented the tailgate trying to remove it. They have tried twice to cover it with touch-up paint but it's a sore spot for me. The service manager offered to have it fixed properly by their body shop but I'm not sure if the cure is worse than the problem. Any opinions on having them remove the logo again and trying to fill the chips and repaint?
On a side note he said Ford is extending the warranty on the logos for this issue. Beware though that unless they're careful you could be getting more than you bargained for.
It's at their body shop now but I really hope the service manager knows nothing about painting and body work. He said they'll have to sand down the end gate and repaint the whole thing. I'm hoping they only need to do some bondo like chip repair and blend the paint but then I know nothing about body work.
It's hard to blend in paint on a panel. Silver paint or metallic paints are impossible to blend in. Generally the body shop likes to do the blending around the corner. What color is it? I had a door ding fixed in silver metallic paint. The whole side had to be repainted to get the color to match.

it's pretty hard to blend the paint unless you can use a body line as the border. On a flat section like around the logo you will see the line where the new and old meet.

It's dark green. Gem I think it was called. So it sounds like they would be painting the whole thing if they know what they are doing. Man what a lot of hassle all because they had an Idjit working on the logo.

I just returned from the FORD dealer because I had the same issue with my tailgate FORD emblem and was told $52.00 for replacement. Drivetrain warranty still in effect however the warranty that covers the emblem and my DEF sensor is expired. FYI, to those who will experience DEF sensor issues my dealer just quoted $900.00 to replace bad sensor P21AB. Where can I find more info on Ford extending logos warranty?

It's better they are re painting the whole part. Let us know how it turns out.
