I freely admit it, I’m a fair weather camper. It’s a summer thing. Pack up the truck and go up into the mountains… find a lake or a river… maybe do a little gold panning.

It was at Donner Lake, in California. Remember the Donner Party? Twenty-two foot snow drifts, and the allegations of cannibalism? That’s the place.
It was cold all right. I figured that I’d be ok, because I had the gear to keep warm.
It happened right after dinner. We’d just gotten done, but hadn’t quite gotten to the pots&pans stage when it happened.
It got so cold so fast that our campfire froze solid… we had to thaw that poor thing out before we could extinguish it for the night!
