3 time in the last week the shift know came off in my hand on my '99 Ranger. It did this once or twice a few years ago, but finally today it is coming off really easy.
I seem to recall hearing of this being a problem on Rangers, is there a solution to this ???
If you are talking about a manual transmission shift **** I had that happen and found that after cleaning the spline area with a cleaner I applied a small amount of RTV Silicone to the spline area placed the **** back in position and let it dry overnite. It has not been a problem since. RTV is forgiving if removal of the **** is necessary. Big Wood
I just bought a 95' Ranger and the shift *** came off also. You could tell that the person who had it before me tryed to put it back on with velcrow. that didn't work well. I just bought a new one. It hasn't came off yet.
Well for Pete's sake, everyone's shift ***** are coming off. Boy, I have an '88 Bronco II, 5 speed, and I tried everything to get mine off. It never would come off!!
I have a rip in the small rubber shift boot, thats is lace wired on the top of the tranny housing at the shift lever. Fluid leaks out of the rip, and has really made my tan/brown carpet in that area look like crap.
I need to replace that boot, so, I have a real reason to get the **** off, and can't... It don't seem to screw off, or want to pull off. No set screws or pins, that I can see.
I haven't tried a pipe wrench. because I'm not one to apply a lot of force, when I think I might damage something either.
I was shifting from 2nd to 3rd and it came off in my hands...I looked at it and said "what the heck???" and absent mindedly tossed it from my hand (I was kinda irritated). Whoa guess what happens next! For some reason the way that it flew from my hand (not a throw but a get ouuta my hand toss) it hit my windshield and cracked it pretty good. My wife that who was sitting next to me wanted to crack my head pretty good after that. Now I have to find a cheap windshield replacement.
Oh, yeah...I threw the darn thing away (in the garbage this time) and got me a nice chrome **** that has set screws that I have torque down pretty good...
Mine usually comes off in my hand if I shift too hard from 1st to 2nd or 3rd to 4th. I usually swear and throw it at my passenger and just shift with the stick alone. It's a good way to keep a passenger on their toes.
My shift **** hasn't come off, but it has been slowly turning in a clockwise direction. I've had the truck about a month, and the shift pattern diagram started out right side up, but now it's upside down.
I'll find this amusing until it pops off in my hand.

That slow turing comes from playing with it too much.
the shift pattern inside the **** is only part of it...you can twist the pattern with your fingers without the **** ever turning. The vibration of the tranni causes it to spin
Instead of replacing it with a cheesy set screw get up that will fall off in a week, you can use the original **** by doing the following:
1. Drill out center of **** (on some there already is a hole all the way through)
2. Using a tap/die set, tap out the inside of the shift shaft
3. Fasten the **** to the shaft with a screw large enough to fit
4. On the picture diagram thingy (thing with the shift pattern), hollow out the splines by melting it away with a soldering iron. ***Do not try to cut it out with an X-Acto knife...you will cut your fingers off...the plastic is too strong.
5. If you are mechanically challenged, or don't have access to a tap/die set (you can rent them at tool rental centers), skip step two and use a wood screw and physically force thread it in there
6. Also, if the **** is spinning, use plumbers tape or masking tape.
Mine was driving me crazy and since the fix it has worked like a charm and the good thing is that the **** is easily removed in case you have to drop the tranny to replace a clutch or boot.
