Fuel PricING

Why is it that the only thing we buy that is tablulated out to the THIRD decimal place is fuel? How did "they" get that extra .009 when nobody else did?

It is a mathematical capitalists' conspiracy to make the buyer think he is paying less than the next penny up. We all know those little numbers go around faster than the fuel goes into the tank.

Me? Complain?! Never.

Just curious. You see, I have a lot of time to think whilst filling up my 44 gallon tank...

My milk isn't 2.499 a gallon.
My engine oil isn't 3.899 a quart.
Soda does not cost .999
and my pants did not cost 35.799.

See? So, why is it only fuel (gas, diesel & home heating) takes the price out to the third decimal place?

because they can!!
I don't know how many gallons a station would pump in a year, but .9 of a cent times ohh.. say a million gallons a year..( i pulled that number out of the air) comes to $9000.00 a year.
At one time it was probably a shrewd operator's way of buying an annual vacation in Hawaii, but now that every station does it, its probablythe only way of turning a profit in a very competitive business

Hey You lucky guys, just be glad you aren't in Canada.

In Canada ,it's measured by the Litre (same as your Quart)

Our price right now is 73.9 cents/litre and our pumps measure
in .000 litres
and
.000 in money

Hee hee! A quart is .999 liters.
Those same silly three digits again.
Have we uncovered some sort of conspiracy here?

Ha ha ha...... (this is a joke)
If you had gotten the PSD you'd have a bigger fill hole. Result: You can use the high volume truck pump to fill. less time spent filling.

But yes I know the feeling. When I take the only v10 we have, down to the fuel station to well fill it. I have a even longer wait 55 gallon tank. So in my waiting I often think about a lot of off things like. Why do people have garage sales but never house sales. or, How can I.......... you should get the picture. A lot of time spent thinking about pointless things. :-X12 (still thinking about winter)

That's funny. Going back a few days, I posted a rant about NBC's biased report about the Excursion. One of the things they mentioned was that it takes over 3 minutes to fill the gas tank. Yeah, so? Makes me want to go out and trade in my truck for a Yugo.......not!

My .009 cents worth

Same thing with Bank Math. Your home loan for example 50,000 @6% should be 3,000, but it ends up more than the original loan after 25 years.

Ok, instead of thinking it as gouging for that extra .9 cents/gallon, just consider it as they're giving you a break of .1 cents/gallon. Would you rather have it rounded up to an even amount or take that break? at a million gallons thats an extra $1,000 they could be making I've often wondered that question though. I think it may be because most things in stores usually end in 9, such as .99 for a soda pop, and plenty of other examples. The price on fuel is more fixed and you can't put it at a price like 1.49 or 1.39 because then you'd end up making an extreme profit or have to take a small profit. Also, I was once told by a man that it was the Jewish store keepers that came up with the prices ending in 9, so it sounds like a better deal. It apparently has proven to be a good business move or it would still be around Just my thoughts and opinions Later.

Yeah, filling up my 94 F250 with dual tanks(37g total) is no treat. Just got done driving between Portland Oregon and Jordan Valley(Way in the middle of nowhere)Oregon this past weekend. About 900 miles RT. Haven't talleyed it up yet but I think we spent about $200 on gas. My guess is that due to the terrible up and down driving and fierce head wind, we got maybe 5-6 mpg in some stretches. Normal mpg towing a trailer is about 8-9. There was one stretch where it was fairly level but the tranny kept shifting to 3rd due to the head wind. We got about 70 miles on 3/4 of a tank(18g) but I haven't filled up since.

Interesting that the gas prices jumped again(why am I surprised) this holiday. 2 weeks ago, one gas stop was about $1.20 for regular. This weekend it was $1.30. Other places along the way were between $1.40 and $1.60 for regular.

One other price gripe. Yah know those gas station convenience marts where you can fill your mug with soda for about $1. Well we stopped in Parma Idaho and it cost over $2 for my mug of soda.

Jeez, got stuck at the pump and the fountain.
