What truck? What engine? The lil book in your glove box will have the recommended service intervals. You cant hurt anything by doing it sooner vz later than the recommended schedule. Always use a high quality filters. Balwin, Racor, Morotcraft etc...
2012 F-250SD. 6.7L The truck is currently in the shop getting an oil change. and reading up on the truck is where I noticed the 15K fuel filter replacement.
What I don't understand is why its only 15K when vehicles used to go thousands of miles before you would need to change the filter. these newer vehicles require more maintenance than any other vehicle I've owned in the past.
All diesels require more maintenance for sure. But they generally last longer than a gasser. What does the owners manual recommend? Keep in mind $30 bucks worth of filters every 15-20K is a hell of a lot cheaper than an injection pump, injectors, a tow and the labor rates of 100/hr. 15K doesnt sound out of line. I have and often do changed filters annually regardless of mileage on gas and Diesels. Cheap insurance IMO.
15K is pretty much the standard that most diesel 6.7 owners will follow. Don't have the dealer do the fuel filter change, matter of fact don't buy the fuel filter from the dealership. The parts counter price is stupid to pay. You can order them online from filter parts warehouse or even on Amazon in the $50 to $55 dollar price range delivered.
Then go take a look at a YouTube video and make it a DIY project, it's not a difficult task to undertake.
My question to you since you were surprised by the 15K fuel filter change interval is, are you aware that you should be checking and draining a fuel sample from the lower filter housing every month or so?
Also, there are 2 fuel filters. One under the truck on the frame rail and the other is under the hood. Both filters should come as a set when they are ordered/purchased.
