A drop in gas mileage and power is usually a symptom of a plugged cat. However, it's usually slight in progression, not sudden, because the cat doesnt get plugged suddenly. If you've got high mileage, it wouldnt be a bad idea to change it, but if you're getting decent gas mileage, it really isn't needed.
mustang is correct you would definitely feel a serious power reduction if the cats were plugged. and no computer has nothing to do with the cats in your case. if they werent there the computer would never know. so why are you asking this question? what problem are you having?
thanx for the info
it was more for preventative maintenace question lightning2fast.
i have done a tune up replaced some sensors that needed changing, but gas milege seems to be down, and power just doesn't seem to be there.
i have got around 255,000 kilometers on it.
i just put a new long block in it,i replaced my o2 sensor lastyear.
i have had sensors replaced, but the truck just feels lazy.
Most muffler shops can do a pressure test to tell if the cat is backed up. Then you can make a decision on what to do with it. Stock replacement cats are not cheap but depending on your emission inspection laws you may have no choice other than replacing it.
I took mine off completely, but the county I'm registered in doesn't have an emission inspection requirement.....yet.
