Angry Figure this...

OK.. I have a 92 ford ranger 2.3 ltr (4 cyl 8 plugs) standard trans.
The prob that im having is a problem that comes and goes as it pleases. NO POWER ... sometimes im doing 35 on the highway, what I find most interesting is if im parked with the engine running and hood up i can rev the engine by grabbing the throttle and the intake hose runnning from intake to breather box wil collapse !!, like the filter would be plugged or something but I can take out the filter and it will do the same thing. had a guy at auto zone pull codes, he said there wasnt any.(I think his gizmo is broke). there is no cat, previous owner cut it out replaced with pipe. driving with the pedal 75% down is faster than driving with pedal down any more than 75% wich makes sense since intake hose collapses, what i just dont get is if the truck feels like it, all of a sudden i'll have ATON of power. and then itll go away later in 5 miles or 50. Previously i changed fuel filter, plugs and wires, then I discovered that the intake hoses collapses when reving the engine,so i disconnected the hose from the intake and took it down the street, ran lke crap( prob because of MA sensor not getting any air)but had fair power. could my muffler be full of crap? and would it make any difference? Iknow some of my intake comes from my exhuast but for the problem to come and go I just dont get. Also IF im having this problem and am straining down the highway after awhile I'll have white smoke coming out of my tail, I'll let off the gas and give it more gas let off the gas about 3 times and itll go away but the motor makes a metallic tapping noise in the proccess. this motor has about 300,000 miles on it, Its been good to me, If anyone has a clue, I sure would like some more life out of this motor. Please help... thanx.

I would replace the intake hose if you don't have any restriction upstream. Check out the tech info post on pulling eec4 codes.

Well I know one thing now, its not the hose and there is no restriction upstream. However, something interesting... A sure fire way to get back my power is to run it out of gas. I did this on purpose today, after having done it twice in the past on accident. The two previous times resulted in total restoration of power for a short while, so after having no power now for several weeks, I grabbed my gas can and set out to run it out of gas. After having run out of gas until I could no longer go, I grabbed my gas can dumped in some juice and wow. Full power is present, and the intake doesnt collapse on acceleration. Oh, and I still havent been able to pull any codes.

Have you checked the fuel pressure?
