I've got a 03 ranger XLT 5 speed , 4.0 extended cab. other than the cd player sucking( they ordered me a new one), 2 things that I need y'all's help on when i shift gears get this awful clunk like the back lash would need to be adjusted in a rear, except its comming from my transfercase. you can feel it as well as hear it . and anywhere after 3 grand i get black smoke increasing as the rpm increases, its not oil but reminds me or raw fuel. when i took it to my dealer this jack *** who was just a little too clean to know what the hell was going on was like oh that clunk is the chains in the transfercase because its primitive and he has a 2001 and it does the same thing , and when i showed him the smoke he said it was cause i was running 89 instead of 87... 3 tanks later it still does it ... i love my ranger please help

Find a new dealer? A call to Ford USA may be in order - to me the point of having a new vehicle is to let the dealer fix it if it breaks... which they should be more than happy to do in order to drag you back in when it's time for a new one... (off my soapbox)
is the clunk happening when it's in 2-hi, 4-lo, or 4-hi? If you just have it in 2-hi the transfer case shouldn't be doing much more than going along for the ride... the chains shouldn't have much to do with anything there. Either way they shouldn't be loose enough to cause a clunk. sound travels faster through metal than air so noises like that are hard to determine exactly where they are coming from - I'd put it in 4-lo and get all 4 wheels off the ground to try and find out where the play is coming from - Ujoint, differential, T-case, output shaft, etc. Or better yet get the dealer to do it on a brand new truck...
The smoke sounds like a problem with the injection, a confused O2 sensor or the like perhaps? Their computer should have picked it up if it's that bad. What kind of emissions testing to they do in your state? Making noises about the fines for not fixing those kind of problems correctly might help... they get pretty steep.
