Which route to go?
I'm new to the forum and have been reading allot of posts to build my knowledge on the different options for trucks to use for towing. I guess I would be a Ford guy through and through, but don't mind the other brands. I currently have an 08 Sport Trac Adrenaline, I love it and its perfect for my daily running around. However I'm looking into getting a truck for towing purposes, more or less looking for some input on what to get to fit my needs. I don't intend on getting rid of the Sport Tac and keeping it as my daily, so I have been looking at used trucks for fitting the weekend toy hauler needs. I currently have a 3200 lb camper that eventually I would like to upgrade, looked at ones around 6k lbs or so. This would be the primary use for the truck on the weekends for camping. I do want the ability to tow an enclosed car trailer and car for 500+ miles on occasions, maybe two to three times a year for car shows that my wife an I like to attend. Iv'e been trying to stay under $20K price tag. I have looked at several newer F150s with the 5.0 as I'm not keen on the eco for long distance towing ability as well as some older trucks with 7.3L/6.0L and 6.4L and currently have my eye on an 08 6.8L F250 with 176K miles, its clean just not sure of the longevity of the 6.8. Input on what to get and what kind of miles etc.. to look at would be greatly appriciated.
One thing I would suggest no matter what you get is to find something with the ford factory Trailer Brake Controller. It's so good.
If you are towing on Pavement, go with the 2wd, that saves you on both purchase price and maintenence.
A SuperCab is a lot cheaper than a Crew cab.
I like gas motors, again, cheaper and they'll handle those loads just fine.
For the prices you are looking at, should have no issues getting something 2008 or newer.
