The hood hinges, inner fenders and fender cowls are all rusted through on my 69...Ive got replacements and ready to dive in. What issues will I face when trying to align the hood since I can not drill holes to get the original alignment? Any other tips or tricks? Or just kinda monkey with the hinge location till its perfect
There is a logical sequence and everything gets bolted loosely. You may need to elongate holes to line everything up.
Inner fenders + core support.
Then the fenders to match up the body lines and gaps
Then the grill shell to set the width
Hood hinges
Then the hood.
Be ready to compromise cuz it's not like manufacturing tolerances were tight back in the day....AND you're working with axes (that's plural of axis).... X, Y, and Z.
I found that aligning the hood hinges got the side to side fairly close but the hood guide brackets were required to position it more accurately. And Hio is correct that it never lined up nice from the factory.
UPDATE Apparently the guide brackets I mentioned were phased out on later 68's and onward. Not sure why because they a very helpful to align the side to side at the back. They were bolted to the firewall.
