Then add to that the packaging. I've had my fill of working on FE's and 385 series, even SBF V8's in tight engine compartments. And being I mainly own vans now there's a slight difference in ease of working on them.
Would you rather have to work on this:
Or this:
I've owned, worked on, built just about all the old Ford engine families and my two favorite have always been the 240/300's & the old 2.3L SOHC engines. The 460's are just a beast. But given a choice I still would choose the 240/300's. Ok done hijacking your thread!

I love the 6's for the exact same reason's you stated above, and have enjoyed the turbo 2.3's as well.
But man, with just a touch of the throttle to move a 3 ton beast (fun ton) with a stock turbo 460 nearly effortlessly and more throttle just keeps pouring on the tq, it's soooo addictive. The turbo starts whistling and the 5 inch exhaust starts yelling "bad azz" for miles. Now we are at 1/4 throttle, should I continue? LOL
I want all that in a lighter, cooler looking truck, that I don't need a step ladder to get into. I'm not getting any younger, this November marks 40 years of wrenching and have acquired a taste for tight tq converters and instant big tq.
A 300 with a properly sized smaller turbo or blower can do close to the same thing, but hp will be limited due to head flow and turbo size.
A 300 with porting, cam, blower, and big turbo feeding the blower would hold it's own against a stock turbo 460, but is much more expensive and doesn't have quite as sweet a sound to me. To each his own I guess.

...I should add the biggest bonus I see with the 460 is very little throttle for the tq vs getting into the throttle a bit more to spool a turbo or even see boost with a blower. That said, I have also considered stroking a 460 for more off idle tq, but that is expensive also so will stay with a 460 and stock cam and let the turbo and head/intake porting make the hp.

I get why you love the big blocks. I've had a few of them ( never turbo'd though ) . Comparing a 300 to a 460 is like comparing a stock 351W to a new 6.7L Power stroke. I love the sound of just about any Ford V8. That's something the 300 can never do ( at least revving ) . But a cammed 300 at idle sounds pretty good too. I like the sound of a built 300 revving out too. They have a sound all there own.
I'm just weird, I feel the 300's don't get enough love. Hell I want to swap a built 300 into my one ton van, that tips the scales at close to 8,000 pounds! It's my work/tow vehicle.
Torque converter? What's that??? I'm weird about that too! I hate automatics!! 3 pedals all the way!!
I'm also weird on revving a 300. It seems like a lot of people are afraid to rev them out. I hear guys talking about keeping them to 2500 rpm or less. I'm like WTF!?! I buzz the damn things till they quit pulling. 5,500 rpm doesn't bug me at all with the 300. And add another 1,000 more then that for the 240's. That's the reason I want to run a built 240 in my 54.
Maybe I'm just weird period!
As long as you are building Ford stuff I'll be watching & learning!

When the 300 was in the sleeper with the ebay gt45 turbo, it did sound quite good and got a lot of compliments on the sound. The only time I didn't like the sound was on a light steady pull it sounded a little droney. That of course is on the race edge of things, turbo and cam. The smaller t72 was much quieter exhaust wise, and the 300 didn't sound no where near as tuff, but being smaller started whistling sooner of course.
My plans are to build a 240 so the the Lunati 277 (or similar) will really have a rumpity sound at idle and scream wide open vs the 300. The head will still dictate the hp, so should be virtually no difference in hp in a turbo application. There will be less tq with the 240 in trade for more rpm which equates to about the same hp. I have seen this in 302 vs 351 turbo engines with the same top end.
Your not weird, I think everyone has some underdog in them. And sooo many people like the 300. I am happy and exited to see people that want to do turbo 300's in my shop, it's just not something I want right now.

What makes that one even better is the manual transmission with the 300!
Not to mention a breeze to work on! I wish that pic was my van! The only thing that sucks about the 300 in a van is the intake & carb side clearance issue with the firewall/dog house opening. But that's where dual carbs come in handy!!: I'm working on building my own dual carb intake and custom headers.
Sorry Sick6. Now back to your big block awesomeness!!

Well...removed engine fan and master cylinder and the 460 fits quite well in the 38, I became very excited! Everything that initially looked tight when the 460 was hovering above, was ok when it was down in the hole.
Can run the exhaust manifolds forward or rearward. Can do a remote turbo with radiator in stock location...big single in the grill with remote radiator...or twins for headlights and remote radiator, possibly stock radiator location.

So...the domino's have begun to fall again. I'm going to cut to the chase and 460/turbo the 38 instead of doing the sleeper first then the 38. Riley will keep the sleeper and the black 300 will be installed. The sale of the black 300 to Jim wasn't finalized, so will talk to him about a screaming turbo 240 in the corvette, as Jim's intentions with the corvette were mostly drag racing.
There maybe...just MAYBE...a small chance that the kenne bell will not go on Riley's dad's 5.0 and may end up on the black 300 for a super turbo charged 300 sleeper.

Geez, it's been a year already time for an update. My 38 BBF plans were interrupted by this, and someday I will post the size of the radiator in here that keeps the 600hp BBF cool...making an inliner in the 38 down the road the right choice.
Meet Popeye, 83 F150 600hp n.a. BBF runs 10.90's. Yes....I have twin cans of spinach ready for him lol.

Where did you come up with that 3 carb/throttle body intake manifold? I like it! I see the 6=8 so know it's a Clifford, but I didn't think they made one like that, only a 2 carb version.
