Hey Mark, I just noticed that we are nearly neighbors!
The 5.4 actually gets about the same mileage as the V-10 because it's working harder to push the EX around.
I can help some with your search for a new EX, looking anyway, I am currently working 12hrs everyday so getting out to see one for you may be tough. What options/trim level/condition/drive/color/year/price range are you looking for? What will you be using the EX for? Long highway trips, towing, daily driver?
Skip the 5.4 and look at the V-10`s. there are reasons why there are so few of them around, and even more reasons that some people dump them and go out and buy a V-10. the mileage is very similar and the power is just as good as a diesel! yes I said it! a V-10 with 4.30`s will hang with a 7.3 all day even a 6.0.
Eternal, you have no idea what you're talking about.
Its a fact, the heavier the vehicle the more power you need to push it. MPG goes down motor stress goes up. I love these mod motors but if you are looking for power you can feel in a tank it will take a ridiculous amount of $ to do it. Im a gas guy my 6.8 is awesome and for the record I know a whole lot about these engines.

Wow! I had no idea that owning a V10 could range from 5 mpg in town to 17 on the highway. (2 recent posters).
Or that a V10 could 'hang' with a 6.0.
What are you guys SMOKIN'?
Good post, Yes Apoc's rig has something wrong to be getting 5 MPG in town and 177's snapshot 17 MPG highway LOM reading is pretty irrelevant, all rational MPG readings must be hand calculated over several tank fillups.
I'm about as big of a V-10 fan as you will find around here, but I'm also a realist and I do not try to sell any BS. My modded 6.8 can run side by side with a stock 7.3 while towing heavy, I'll get a good look at the back end of a 6.0 rig dragging the same weight. To get the best performance from a V-10 it pays to run deeper gears, good tunes and open up the exhaust some. The diesels do have much more potential with the right mods, initial cost was the biggest deciding factor in my V-10 purchase vs a PSD.
WE3ZS,thanks for your time in searching other vehicles.Right now I was just curious about the 5.4V8 because of price and color(toreador red).AS far as a V10 I can't see how you can get any good gas mileage out of that motor.Gas is cheap now but don't think it's going to stay that way long.Everyone else thanks for your input.

Prior to my lift, 35" tires and gear swap in stock trim I regularly got 14 to 14.5 MPG on tankfuls of mostly highway driving with a best of 15.5 that was about 75% highway with 6 adults onboard in hot weather. All running solo of course, towing our then 31' 9,500lb toyhauler we saw 6.5 to 7 MPG. Now with the mods all in place the few solo tanks of mixed driving have been in the 12.5 MPG range, but it really doesn't see the solo miles like before, it's primarily a tow rig now. The performance upgrades made a big improvement with towing mileage, now pulling our 41' 11,000lb TT we have seen tank averages from 8 to 9.25 MPG. That's pretty good for a V-10 EX, but comparison are tough, too many variables.
I have read reports here of 7.3 and 6.0 owners seeing about 12-ish MPG pulling similar loads, but again, so many variable to consider. Also remember that not every PSD is actually getting the high MPGs that you may have read about, some do but others just don't do nearly as well.
Lol yes yes you guys are all right. I got the big y pipe, 2 1/2 exhaust Flowmaster, no cat, throttlebody spacer, K&N filter and a superchip tuner on xs fuel mode. It averages 11 to 13 usually, with 60 mi round trip every day. That pic was a 25 mi trip with less than a 20' change in altitude.
For the gas mileage question. When mine was stock with 3.73's I could get 15mpg all day on the hwy with no load. My combined city by was about 11 or so. When I went to 4.30's my hwy mileage dropped to 14.3 and my city/hwy went to 12.5. My towing mileage went from 7 with the 3.73's to 8ish with the 4.30's
Real world numbers here.
For a while I had a big mileage problem that was traced to 87 octane with 10% ethanol. When I switched to 93 100% gas my mileage came back up. I don't care what people say ethanol sucks as a fuel!
And as Tom said yes I can stay side by side with a stock 7.3 and hang with (never said beat) a stock 6.OH NO!, there go the head gaskets!
I got 32 mpg resetting the lie meter and rolling down hill with my foot off the gas. V-10 expect 10 to 13 depending on your driving habits. 80 will get you about 10.5 I have owned two of them and it is a really good engine

I was truly getting a 10 to 12. I have since takn it out for a DONT HATE ME... CUMMINS
fired it up for the first time yesterday.
I have seen 17ish on extended trips with my 2005 v10
I have not owned it long and i expect to see some drop with the mods i am making, but when i brought it home from cali a month or so ago i filled her up in Pagosa Springs Colorado and ran the 230 miles home from there at 2-5 over the speed limits (58-70 mph) over five mountain passes and got a hand calculated 16.87 mpg. At that time she was stock 3.73s
I have installed 4.56s, 3-4 inches of lift and am waiting on my new rubber to be delivered today. I am sure she will lose some economy.
