I have a 94' F-150 with a 460 conversion. I bought it a couple of weeks ago and began to realize that this truck doesnt feel like its giving the power it should. It has the cobra jet heads and the an edelbrock intake with a holley 750 carb, and a bunch of other good stuff. This truck should be pushing over 500hp. I noticed that sometimes when I sit at a red light for awhile that when I start to go I blow some thick white smoke, but not all the time. Then today I noticed that one exhaust pipe is blowing hot air and the other is cold or luke warm. Could I have a blown head gasket or could it be something else. Please help. Thanks
How is your coolant level? If it is droping you probably have a blown head gasket. Go to the auto parts store and buy a pressure tester that goes on your radiator. If it holds pressure its not a gasket. Make sure that your spark plug wires are where they are supposed to be too. Its hard to say what firing order you have, depends on the cam but I believe there are only two firing orders
Well, today I checked the spark plugs which look like they are burning fine, I checked my oil and it looks normal (not milky). The exhaust pipe which seems to blow cooler than the other I noticed is wet inside all the time. I havent driven my truck all weekend and inside the exhaust tip is wet (it feels a little oily)
I believe that it is your headgasket. If you think the cooler pipe is the side with the head problem than you could put a jar over the end of the pipe and collect the vapors( If it isn't streaming out, which would be obvious) and wait for it to condense. Most of the time the vapors from antifreeze will still be green and you will have collected enough for the green tint to prevail.
Also remember depending on the hummidity levels in your area, it will condense inside the exhaust pipes after shut down. I have that problem around in New Orleans. I thought I had a head gasket problem until I realised my radiator overflow had a hole in it. Once I changed that I stopped losing antifreeze. I have a 6 lbs cap on my radiator and I have no problems with fluid level drop or boilover.
ok... well i had 3 rocker arm nuts break on that side... i just found out so that side of the motor wasnt even working... i put the rockers on with new nuts and the back piston isnt moving... i believe i damaged a lifter. thanks for your help guys
