Question Idling problem??

1988 F150 302 efi, 5spd 4x4

Every few days my truck likes to have a high idle (1100 rpm) and when shifting gears (clutch pedal pushed down) it will stick at 2200 or so, for two seconds then drop back down to 1100. A couple minutes later it might run fine (idle @ 650 rpm) for the rest of the day. Shuting the truck off and restarting it usually fixes the problem.

This morning I started the truck and for the first time it idled fluctuating up and down between 300 and 650rpm's; check engine light was also on. It corrected itself slowly after about a minute--hit the gas and it would start over. When I drove the truck, it had a slight "bucking" hesitating only while accelerating below 2000rpm. An hour later, started her up and it ran fine; no engine light.

I installed headers a few days ago but the truck has run perfectly up to today. The o2 sensor is still in the system but only on the passanger exhaust. Nothing is consistent.

Any ideas? Thanks, Joemo

Idling problem??

I would clean the IAC. Check the hose leading to the MAP as it may be cracked. You might want to also disconnect the battery and step on the brake pedal for 30 seconds to 'unlearn' the idle strategy that was remembered before you changed the exhaust system... tom
