Over heating

I have a 2000 Ex with 252,000 miles. I live in Springfield Mo
Where it is extremely hilly (Ozark Mountains). I tow a 6400 lb travel trailer. What I am having problems with is the Ex is running extremely hot when towing and climbing hills. Not in the red, but damn close. No problems what so ever when not towing. No problems when towing on level ground. I know the Ex is working hard, but I want to keep it running cooler. I have flushed the radiator literally 20 times and have done 2 chemical flushes. Is it time to just replace the radiator? If so what one do you guys recommend? How many passes does the stock radiator have? What about a bigger water pump? Any suggestions is always appreciated. I have the 5.4 motor, which I love so no bashing my little V8. It has all the power I need. I don't need to climb hills doing 90mph.

Apparently not if your overheating pulling your load
I would think you are describing that your fan clutch is out or surly on the way

You need some digital gauges to accurately read temps. Scan gauge or torque app would show you how hot you are really running.

What size radiator did yours come with - 1 row, 2 row or 4 rows of cooling tubes? I was just looking thru radiators that are available for the 2000 Ex 5.4l. If yours is a 1 or 2 row you might be able to get the 6.8l 4 row in there. All the radiators listed were the same overall dimensions. Has anyone done that? The list doesn't state how many rows in every radiator, but the 6.8ls were 10 lbs heavier. I had an E-150 351W short bed van that I used for towing and put in a monster E-350 460 RV 4 row radiator that bolted right in. Never had a cooling problem after that. I suspect the V10s, 7.3s and 6.0s all came with the same 4 row radiator with maybe hose connection differences. Our 6.8l measures 2.25" thick at the cooling tubes.

Maybe a bit too obvious but; Did you try changing the thermostat? Use a motorcraft one.

I feel your pain brother. Just had head gaskets done on.mine due to overheating. I also went from the 1 3/4" think radiator to the 2 1/4" think radiator. Never had any issues with the other one and there seems to be no direct info on which one the V10 had front he factory. Seems they got whatever was available not like the v8 or diesel that had specific ones.
