A couple weeks ago, my truck pulled my trailer to FL and back to GA flawlessly. Made a trip to Rome, GA last weekend and had nothing but pings and loss of power all the way. I *think* the problem is related to bad fuel from a Conoco station. 87 octane.
Looked at spark plug wires, going to try to move 7 & 8 farther from each other.... but nothing really changed to start the ping--at least that I know of.
Check engine light came on 3 times while towing on the 170 mile trip. Never came on once during the trip to FL and back (700 miles) the weekend before.
Sound like a case of indigestion (bad fuel)? Should be ready for a gas up on Saturday evening.
I have a 1993 F-150 and have constant pinging while accelerating. I've tried different gas and still can't get rid of it. I've checked the usual stuff and have it narrowed down to the knock sensor and/or carbon buildup.
Yeah, I'm the same fellow from F-150online. Thanks for the suggestions... I've tried new gas and am going to see if that clears the problem. If not, then I'll be checking all these things y'all mentioned--due for oil change/tire rotation too!
I had a very similar problem with my Ford van. I replaced the map sensor after reading about it on this site. It took care of my problem. I hope this helps you.
It's located right above the heater box on the passenger side firewall under the hood. It has three wires going into it and a vacuum tube. It can be tested, which I would recommend, because it's $46.99 at Autozone.
