Hey guys, I've been quiet around here, but always lurking! I finally got around to doing the motor swap from my 94 Super Cab to the 94 Crew Cab I bought last year. Everything went smooth, and she is running well except that I decided to swap turbo's because the one on the crew looked to be rebuilt, (tags and anti-sieze visible, and quite clean) and the existing turbo was puking oil all over the engine. It runs well, but now it blows black smoke like a redneck's Cummins when I bog it down or get into the throttle. I mean like I have never seen an IDI roll coal. I am going to turn down the IP screw to see what that does, would a different turbo make that much difference in fuel air mixture? should I be concerned about this turbo? I actually have another one I can put on, but like I said, it seems to be running fine. I have not hooked up my EGT gauge yet. Other than that, I am stoked! It has not moved under it's own power in 11 years, but when I got her back together, everything worked including the original factory cassette stereo, and the AC blows like the Arctic winds! It even had two full tanks of diesel. Come to think of it, I have always heard that diesel won't go bad, but does anyone think that might be the cause of the smoke? It is 11 year old fuel! here are a couple pics. Except for the bumpers, this thing is bone stock and all original all the way down to the mechanical jack and handle under the hood! It even had the original rims and hubcaps, but I swapped them out for the Supercabs Alloys and MT's! I gotta say though, I am so not digging the manual trans! I am pulling all the parts from the Super Cab to do a swap, and the E40D will go to the shop to get bullet proofed. I probably won't get it done before the snow falls this year though.
That is a darn fine looking truck you have. In fact that is my dream truck!!! I hope to find one like it next year. I wish I could help with the smoking issue. I have heard that diesel fuel can go bad. I guess I would run the old fuel out and then a few tanks through it before I worried about the smoke. This is only if all the vitals stay good, like no major loss of oil. Keep an eye on all fluids to be safe.
Thanks 83, I'm real happy with her. I just went to Autozone to get some dieselclean and also bought some fuel and tank cleaner, dumped a bunch of that in, and filled the first tank with another ten gallons of fresh diesel. We will see how that goes tomorrow. It also occurred to me that at 11 years old and from New Mexico, this is not ULSD and probably has a much higher cetane level than she is use to. I am comfortable with the motor, I rebuilt the top end about three years, but only about 15k miles ago. I will monitor the fluids, and see how she does. I will know by the end of the weekend as we are camping at about 11k feet!
#1: hook up the dang pyrometer!!
#2: i have run 20 year old diesel with absolutely no problems.
#3: turn down the fuel a few flats, you need to match the fuel to the turbo.
Congrats on your crew cab! I know you have wanted one for a long time. Looks good. So was that the engine from your white truck? Just a different charger attached to it? Did you re-time it after the install? Return line back pressure can really whack out your timing. That would be one possible change I can think of that would make it roll the coal. I'm sure you will get it nailed down. FYI that nice Lund sun visor you gave me a couple years back ended up going with Jan's truck to Czech Republic, I found another one for myself in the Prescott junkyard.
Well, I drove her up I-70 into the high Rockies this weekend. I had no issues, she ran great and didn't smoke much at higher rpm's. I will get the pump turned down, and check the timing this week. I am going to get better gauges than the ones I had, so it will be a little bit before they are installed. Yeah F834 it is the motor from the white truck. She is getting another motor and going to a good home. So glad you were able to help Jan out with his truck and get it over there. Awesome job!
