429

Hey everyone, need some information.. Will a Ford 429 Bolt up to my NP435 transmission? If so what further modifications or parts would need to be changed out to make this happen? I currently have a 390 that's on its last leg.. I love the NP435 so if 429 wouldn't bolt up than I wouldn't even consider..

Thanks,

Not with your current FE bell housing. Could use bell from 351M/400, assuming no difference in input shaft on tranny, which I have no idea. Would need a flywheel specific to 429 that also fits in 400 Bell

plus you need to find a clutch flywheel and pulley system for the front of the engine. also engine mounts oil pan with pickup tube. stick with the 360/390. much easier to work with.

I almost tried that swap too then decided there was too much involved.....so instead built a 445 FE. That just involved ALOT of money.

The level of difficulty involved with this swap is totally dependent on how much money your willing to spend in my opinion. If you have the cash you can buy all the conversion parts and make it a fairly straightforward job. I put a 71 model 429 in my 79 when I was 18. I already had a 351 mod bell housing. So that saved me some money. For the internally balanced flywheel I used a 390 fly and drilled it to accept a 351 mod clutch and pressure plate. i had my pilot bearing turned at a machine shop. Some people experience trouble with the pressure plate hitting inside the bell housing. I solved this by using two of the spacer plates that go between the engine and bell housing, which provided just enough distance to stop all rubbing. My motor mounts I bought from bronco graveyard. They were a pretty good fit. I used the original 351m starter with no problems at all. I used factory manifolds with a custom bent pipe to work with the passenger side 4x2 manifold. I never changed any of my front accessory brackets, belts or pulleys. Everything bolted up for me. I believe that is all I had to do to make everything work. The clutch, pressure plate, and proper flywheel balancing are probably the most tedious of the whole job. But still very doable with basic mechanical skills. If you want a 429 in your truck I say go for it! You'll be happy with the end result.

No problem. After I replied though I reread your thread and seen where you had decided to keep the 390. Sorry, I wasn't trying to change your mind. I had just missed that post. Lol.
