I'm having the common problem of the oil pressure gauge sporadically reporting no oil pressure. Additionally, my engine coolant gauge is not functional. I'm interested in installing permanent aftermarket gauges so that I can better monitor the readings. Is there any consequence to disconnecting the stock circuits, other than the stock gauge cluster showing no values? I'm worried that they could be tied into the ECU.
Thanks for any help, if you have any suggestions for low cost aftermarket gauges I would appreciate that as well.
A common problem with the oil pressure reading on the instrument gauge is the sending unit itself.
If you have a '95, 302 or 351W the sending unit is mounted just above/forward of the spin on oil filter.
Just make sure you get a replacement that is for the gauge.
If you have the light, then you'll need that sender unit.
The temperature sending unit is mounted on the left front corner of the lower intake manifold, and Yes, it is read thru the ECU, (OBD I) the ECU operates in the "open loop" mold until engine temperature is reached and then goes into the "closed loop" mold to control many other functions.
Even-thought the OEM gauges are not the best, like SW, there still functional and useful for general operations.
By-passing them for top of the line gauges might be a bright idea, if your running the track, or doing the weekend drag races, but for normal street driving, the OEM's are fine, until like in your case, the sending units have failed.
