'96 ac problem

I have a '96 ranger with the 4.0. The ac has a leak in or around the compressor.I bought some leak detection dye. The man at the parts shop said to put it in and then bypass the low pressure over ride switch to make the compressor operate with out wasting refrigerant. How is this done and where is this switch? Or should I put the dye in and then just fill it untill the compressor kicks on?
Thanks for any help.
john

I recently had to add a can of refrigerant to my 99 & I added it until the compressor switched on. Only took about 30 seconds for the compressor to begin short cycling, then it would stay on longer as the low side psi numbers began to build toward normal. It took exactly one can to bring everything up to normal. Don't add more than one can.

I would agree to put the dye in then fill until the compressor kicks on.
It's most likely leaking from the O-rings where the hose connect to the compressor.
