I replaced both fuel filters on my ex yesterday, and prior to I watched a couple of YT videos on how to do it. In the videos I watched the upper filter was essentially white every time. Mine came out black, and the bottom one was partially black.
Since I've owned the truck this is the third replacement I can recall of the fuel filters. I'm thinking it was longer than I thought between replacements or the last place didn't actually replace the filters as I asked, paid for and provided the ford oem's for.
Either way - is the upper filter being completely black something to be concerned about? Inside the upper bowl it looked clean.
How frequently are you changing the filters? Yours being black could indicate you're stretching them out a bit too long, or you've got some gunk in the tank. Not sure why the lower filter wouldn't be as dirty as the top unless it has a higher micron rating than the engine filter. How did the other filters look when you changed them, assuming you saw them?
As Stewart mentioned, letting us know what engine you have will help out immensely. Assuming it's a 6.0 or a 7.3, I believe the FSM calls for every 15k, but people have had better luck with the 10k change interval.
After almost having to pony up for a new set of injectors, I make sure I replace mine (7.3) every other oil change at 10,000 miles.
Thanks for the replies, from what I can tell, only 1 of the 4 engines came with two fuel filters upper/lower style but I just found the signature and updated it anyway.
I would wait and see what the next ones look like. The last time I changed fuel filters on my truck they were pretty dirty for how many miles were in them. It all depends on how clean the fuel was when you put it in the tank. The top usually looks a bit dirtier than the bottom.

You know that, and some of us know that, but without that information being posted, we don't know that you know. Plus, do you really want others who don't know, posting erroneous information based on their assumption you have a gasser?
It's not too much to ask for information to be properly presented in order for proper help to be given.
