Hello everyone, I'm obviously new to the board so hopefully I'm not repeating a question. I'm looking to buy a new F150 to tow my travel trailer with. I currently have a 2011 F150 with the 5.0 V8, but have been told by a handful of folks I should switch to the 3.5 Ecco. Travel trailer weighs 7,000lbs. Any and all thoughts are welcomed, and I appreciate your help.
I prefer naturally aspirated engines over turbo charged engines. I don't like turbos unless all out performance is more important than durability. A turbo continues to spin after you shut off the engine. The oil pump is connected to the engine and stops pumping oil when the engine stops. This means the turbo is spinning down without oil pressure.
I chose a 5.0 because of the reason above. I work in reliability, testing engines on the natural gas pipeline. All of our engines are set to continue oil lubrication after the engine is stopped and until the turbo stops spinning. Even with that the turbos don't last as long as the engines and we regularly get the equivalent of over 1,000,000 miles of run time out of the engines.
The Eco Boost does get better gas mileage than the 5.0 that I picked...but that savings will be washed away when you have to replace the turbo. None of this matters if you don't keep a vehicle a long time.
