No oil pressure

I was driving my 1973 f-250 on the freeway and saw that I had no oil pressure. I got it off the road and shut down quickly without damage. it did smell hot but my temp gauge was in the higher end of normal where it always is. it has been sitting in my garage for over a yr. and its time to try to diagnose and repair. all of the sending unit train seems to be intact and properly connected. where do I Begin? pan removal and pump and drive shaft inspection I suspect. I don't want to remove the engine or do unnecessary work. I'm sure somebody has a theory that will be helpful.

btw it has a 460 I've never been inside this one but I've worked on fords similar and I'm quite capable of fixing this problem and looking for direction.

Trouble shoot the instrumentation (oil pressure gauge), elec power and then the sending unit first before you drop the pan.

Agreed. Could be an issue with that rather than the engine.

If you disconnect the wire from the sending unit and ground it with the key in the run position, the gauge should go all the way to the high side - if it does, the gauge and wiring and power supply are good, and it's either the sending unit or oil P is actually low. If not, there's a problem with either the wiring, the gauge, or the power to the gauge (possibly instrument panel voltage regulator if other gauges also have issues). If the gauge, etc. are working, I'd probably hook up a mechanical gauge or swap to a new sending unit (cheap) and crank it up briefly to check pressure before dropping the pan.

BTW, good thinking getting off the road quickly in case it actually is an oil pressure issue and not just a false reading!
