hey yall.my oil pressure gage sometimes stays at the "n" on normal and sometimes never rises above that, if it does rise it stops at "o" on normal.i changed the oil and filter today and took her out, pressure did'nt rise from "n" until i stopped for a few minutes and started her up and drove home and the gage was arround the"r" on normal.
do i have a problem that needs immidiate attention or is this just normal.
thanks.
I have that problem on my 91 Mustang. I have replaced the sending unit, it still does it, I replaced the wire that connects on to the sending unit and it still does it. If my wife sits in the car while it is running and I wiggle the wire on the sending unit the gauge works fine, if I move it to just the right spot it will work for a couple days then back to way to low oil pressure. It has been doing it for years.
Depends on the year of the truck. The gauges on anything newer than somewhere in the mid '80's isn't really a gauge anyway. It is basically just an on/off sending unit with the dash gauge set to read somewhere in the normal range. If you're worried, get an actual gauge and see what the pressure is really doing.
the truck is a 1991 f-150 5.8L 351w v8 2wd, do you know of any perfect replacement gage (after market) ,and i now noticed that the water temp gage does the same thing, it never goes higher than "n" on hot days, cold snowy days or from Cali to New Mexico drive, i have the lowest thermostat there is and change when winter s comming
F.T.E. RULES !!

If your temp gauge is staying that steady, your cooling system is working great. I wouldn't worry about it.
Just get a $10 gauge from walmart and hook it up to the same spot the stock sender is, put the gauge under the windshield wiper and drive for a while. If the pressure is less than 15 psi @ hot Idle or less than 35 crusing the highway, you may want to think about some new bearings before it causes any damage. The general rule is 10psi per 1000 rpms, but that is low for these engines.
The least you would need to do is take the oilpan off and check the oil pump screen, it could be clogged.
