I have a 1940 1-1/2 ton panel delivery fire engine. The PTO is off to fix the trans. and I would like to disassemble and clean the PTO and replace the seals. Does anyone have a confirmed source for those parts? James at JobLot did not. It is a Spicer CF7M. I have the part numbers, but Google came up empty. Checked with the local Spicer/Dana rep, but they do not have any documentation that old. They will try to find seals if I bring it in, but no guarantees.
The trans. makes a lot of noise in 3rd gear and a mechanic said there was definitely something wrong in the trans. We dropped the trans., PTO, oil pan and removed the pressure plate, clutch, and flywheel. The 3rd/4th gear slider has a toothache and will get replaced; will swap the guts from a spare trans. into the panel's case. Yes, we will check everything carefully and have a shop resurface the flywheel and balance the flywheel/pressure plate assembly. Bought the clutch package from JobLot a few months ago in anticipation of the project. Ordered the oil pan gaskets/seals from James today (did not know we had to drop the pan until we did).
Gary, how the heck did you do this by yourself on your panel? Took three of us much of the day to get it all removed.

The 34 year old assistant in my cabinet shop is 'strong like ox'. Also the new cab floors I made were bolted in, so easy to remove. Plus I did not have to drop the pan because the parts that got damaged on the clutch I was able to work on in place. I'm not saying it was easy by any means, but Danny just reached down through the floor and lifted out the tranny and set it in front of the truck on the shop floor. BTW the 11" clutch with a car oil pan is a bad idea. Mine is that way too. If you had the correct truck pan with removable bottom cover you can replace clutch with pan intact. Glad you are gettin' er done. Mine is smooth as can be now. Replacing the rear leaf springs this afternoon. They are a mess with broken leafs. I have a real nice set from the trailer I took the rear end from.
We're a bunch of old farts who most definitely are not strong like ox, but are full of bull. I'm kind of glad that we had to remove the oil pan since we found some gunk that I can remove and clean the oil pump/screen. I assume it's the original engine. The trans S/N matches the frame S/N so that is original. My rear spring pack is way too solid for the unloaded weight of my truck; will eventually remove some leaves.
Thanks for the offer; I'll save your user ID. The previous owner pumped water in 2008 and then parked the fire engine in his garage until I bought it last year. We believe the PTO is fine. The mechanic just wanted to replace the seals while it is out of the truck for the trans repair.
If it's any help. Anytime I need seals that arent in the book. I just take it to napa or our local bearing shop and they can measure the outside diameter, inside diameter, and thickeness and usually come up with something that will work.
Thanks, that's probably what I'll have to do. I was hoping to bring new seals to the mechanic before he disassembles the PTO, but that does not look possible.
