In the morning, she starts great. Right up. And that's the least time she'll start until tomorrow's morning. Once in a while I'll turn the key and nothing happens, all of my lights are on like normal, but once I turn the key to start, absolutely nothing happens. Next morning, started right up. I can't leave her running everywhere I go. I'm confused, this is my first diesel, I just bought her with 265k miles, looks like she was well taken care of. But she doesn't like to start since the day after I bought her. New alternator because Ford told me, for $208, that I needed an alternator...then tried to charge me $700 to put one in! I put one in, battery light doesn't come on, she still won't start once warm. Help!
Yes, most of the time it'll crank but not start. Sometimes, like today, I'll turn the key and absolutely nothing happens. My idiot lights are all on, I've got juice, just nothing. I'm wondering if my ignition switch is also going out? What's an HPO please?
Am in the same boat, turn the key no go. Have replace starter, batteries, the steering column switch that detects park or neutral, and 30 amp fuse. So suspect the contacts on the ignition switch are going south (147K).
When I press the key in, into the steering column she will turn over 95% of the time. No pressure, less then 50%. It is worse in the afternoon when the vehicle is warmed up in the cab.
Has anyone had a similar problem? The fix will require removal of Key-In-Ignition Warning Switch. Am I looking at a complicate major repair or minor repair?
Hpo is high pressure oil the engine needs high pressure oil to run. If your alternator bit the dust you need to have your batteries load tested. Before you start replacing parts you need to properly diagnose the problem. If your going to fix it or try to fix it yourself you need GAUGES THAT READ LIVE DATA. Very important or your you can replace parts all day and still won't fix the problem. Not starting after the first start of the day deffinately sounds like you could have a high pressure oil leak and once the oil warms up and thins out it can't build enough pressure to start. You need to look into either a scangauge 2 or one of the apps for a smart phone. If your turning the key to start it and it's not even cranking it's time to start checking electrical connections to make sure they are clean and tight. Ricky also need to know what year yor truck is because the hpo systems are different between 03-04 and 05-07 models.

Thanks Mike. It's a 2005 4x4. I've had 2 places, 1 was Ford, plug their computers into her and both did load tests on the batteries. Ford told me that my alternator was only putting out 45 amps and needed to be replaced. My battery light was going on periodically, so I replaced the alternator. Battery light hadn't come on since. Problem still exists. Ford charged me $208 for the diagnostic test. I've got a friend bringing over a scanguage2 today, so well see what that says. So how do I find an HPO leak?
after you put the scan gauge on it, monitor ICP (needs 500+) while cranking. Watch IPR% as well, shouldn't see 85%, but may if the HPOP isn't outputting high enough pressures.
Try unplugging the ICP sensor and try starting, if it runs, replace the sensor. You may need to pull the IPR sensor as well to check the screen, it may be clogged.

Thanks, I'll check that this evening when my buddy brings the gauge over.
Sounds like you killed the FICM a bad alternator will do that
I've been wondering about that. Damn, that's an expensive part! You'd think Ford would have told me when they charged me $208 to run diagnostics. Will the scangauge2 tell me if my injector control module is bad?
It will show you main and logic power on the main power anything below 45 volts is bad and you need to send the ficm to Ed. Here is a link to the codes for the 6.0 if your buddy's gauge isn't programmed already. Just scroll down to 6.0 diesel section. Ford/Lincoln/Mercury Specific : Linear Logic : Home of the ScanGauge

You might want to check your starter relay. If your ride has a lot of miles on it the relay contacts are probably getting bad. That is probably the reason it starts fine in the morning and after the bad contacts get heated the contact resistance goes up. Therefore, little to know current flow. I had an issue with my FICM power relay leading me to believe it was a bad FICM. Sent it to Ed and he said the FICM was good. Replaced the FICM power relay and all is good.
OBTW - while Ed had the FICM I had him do the ultimate update and the Atlas 80 tune. AWESOME tune!!!! It's scary how quick my X is. Getting a LOT better mileage and significantly easier starting.
