Question about 6 cyl.

Hi guys, I bought a 56 F 100 that is a true barn find. It was taken apart 30 yrs ago and left in a barn. It came with the original 239 Y block still in the truck which is seized. I haven't really checked that engine out except I pulled the dipstick and found the oil to be the consistency of glue. I also got a extra Y block that according to the number is a 272. That one was left outside under what was once a tarp. It was also seized but I freed it up. It had about a gallon of water in the oil pan. I don't think I trust either of these engines. I found a 223 6 cylinder on Craigslist that is out of a 54 F100. I also found a complete but very rusty 1962 F350 with a 6 cylinder that looks very similar. I may be able to buy the 62 for cheap if the engine is any good. I really like the idea of a straight 6 in this truck. I plan to retire in a year or so and start on it then. My Question is will that 62 engine work in my 56? Thanks for your thoughts.. Greg.

Greg - The 272 that had water in it may be OK, but you have to put the engine on an engine stand and drop the pan to look inside. The Y-Blocks had a dipstick with a small cup that fits over the dipstick tube that wasn't sealed from the factory. A little rain here and there adds water straight to the pan over time. If there was no carb on the engine or air filter on the carb then I'd be more concerned with water getting into the manifold and straight to the tops of the pistons with water leaking passed the rings. But if you were to get the engine moving I'm thinking it was the dipstick issue. I can't speak to the 6 out of the 1962 however. I'm no sure if that will fit. The 272 is a fine engine if you can take a look inside and give it a once over; though I know the straight six is an appealing option.

Yes, either six will work, but you will need the six bell housing to mate to your trans. Not sure if the early/late 223 motor mounts the same up front, I think they do.
A complete donor truck would be great, as you will get all those extra misc parts you might need.

Thanks for your replies guys. I have had the pan off the 272 and on a stand, it may be ok. I will check further into the 62.
