About a week ago, I started getting a minor vibration at 45 MPH in my 87 F-350 with a 460/auto transmission. It happened at that speed whether I was on or off the gas. (The vibration feels like I put a quarter in my hotel bed..)
2 days ago it started getting worse and I crawled under to look at the U-joints - they were tight and the carrier bearning for the extended drive shaft (crew cab) looks good.
Last night - I had a new clunking sound just as I pulled in to home.
I called the guy who rebuilt the motor and said I needed to check the bolts holding the transmission to the flywheel. Have you guys heard of this? If so, is this something a regular person could tighten? I'm not a mechanic but pretty handy. Also - is there some type of cover that I need to take off to access?

Yes, I had an auto trans. do this a few years ago. Shook the entire truck like a rag in a dog's mouth. That problem was a cracked housing but loose bolts on the torque converter or on the transmission to engine would do the same thing.
Well it wasn't what I thought - all the bolts were fine so I drove to the transmission shop to get some help. They took it for a test drive and came back to the shop. We discussed the problem and they pulled it around to the bay. When they put it in reverse to get the right angle in, the U-joint that connects to the rear end gave up and the drive shaft was on the ground. Made a pretty terrible noise...
Anyway, about 400.00 later it's now back to smooth as silk. All new U-joints, carrier bearing and bracket plus a new yoke to the rear end.
Of course they still want to know what caused it and I said 330 or so HP and 500+ foot pounds of torque.
