88 F-150 302 - getting oil on 4 of 8 plugs. Exhaust blows white smoke at startup, but no other time. Will be getting compression gauge this weekend to test. Neighbor tells me this is symptoms of leaking valves if it only smokes at startup. Using about 2 quarts over 3000 miles.
Does this sound like valve problems or could it also be the rings?
White smoke = water
Blue smoke = oil
Black smoke = gas
However, blue smoke looks a whole lot like white smoke. The symptoms above are consistent with leaking valve stem seals. That's rather normal for a 15 year old engine.
When it hits 1 qt per 1000mi is my personal limit for acceptable level of air pollution, but then again, I live in Houston. Rebuild the whole thing. You will be wasting money to only do the top end because you will need to be into the bottom end with a year or so, anyway. It is, most assuredly, ALL wore out.
