new motor with less than 100 miles. 400 bored .030 over, comp XE 262 with their springs, lifters, retainers and timing set, stock dish Pistons, Aussie Cleveland heads, Hedman headers, stock ignition, new Holley 600 4160.
Was running just fine other than cranking slow on a hot start and an off idle stumble. Changed the accelerator pump squirter and put a heat shield on the starter. Fired up just fine and I was backing out of the driveway when the steering got real tough. There was a pop and the truck died.
The crazy long NAPA plug wires I reused ; number 8 snagged on the steering shaft and pulled apart. Before discovering this I tried restarting to no avail.
Installed some new Taylor cut to fit plug wires and still no start. The bowls on the carb are full and the accelerator squirts, I have spark at the coil. I get some popping out of the carb while cranking and it sometimes tries to fire.
I'm at a loss, unless something is up with the new carb. It's almost like it's not getting fuel flow from the venturis. Don't really know where to go from here. If I have time tomorrow I'll check cranking vacuum and maybe compression. I could check the rotor position compared to the balancer and see if it's jumped time I guess.
Yatzee. Popped the distributor cap to verify timing and there it was... rotor tab all bent. Apparently when the steering shaft pulled the wire off it yanked the cup that the dist. Cap mounts to over, causing the rotor to get tweaked. $4.99 for a new rotor and she purrs like a kitty
