Over heating issue

Im running an 2008 F-450. And towing a goose neck trailer with the total weight of 12,000, including the car in tow. We were traveling from Cleveland to Columbus last week. Traveling south down Rt. 71. Which has some subtle gradient here and there. But nothing extreme. Thank god i havent tried any mountain runs yet. when i started noticing the temp gauge climbing from middle normal range to high normal. It would then kick out the cruise control. It would cool off after about 5 minutes of slower driving. We were only traveling at 65 mph. Outside temp was about 78 degrees. I shut off the A/C and it seemed to improve.
Should it be over heating like this. The capacity of the 450 is 25,000. Im at half that right now. Seems kind of ridiculous if you ask me. Are these truck prone to heating problems. And if so. Is there a high performance supplement cooling system.

Thank for the help in advance,

Steve Tucholsky

Did you hear your cooling fan engage? Have you checked the thermostat?

Sounds like you are getting flow through the radiator if it cooled down after you decreased speed. I would check the cooling fan. It may not be engaging when the radiator fluid heats up.

Now that you mentioned it. I havent been hearing the fan come on. It did come a few times towards the end of the trip. It used to come on often. Dont know why it would be coming on less during heavier usage? I can check the stat too. Thanx.

Clutch may be going bad. Check for free play(spin) or fluid coming out at the clutch bearing area on the back side. When is the last time you did a coolant flush?

The fan should come on as soon as you turn on the A/C. It should run continuously. Check the anti-freeze to make sure it's still good. it may need to be changed now. Do the T stat and hoses to.

the fans are electrically controlled. Check the sensor for it. Usually right at the top of the shroud.
