The more I learn the less I know. I am trying to like this truck (91 F250 7.3 i.d.i., 4 x 4, reg. cab. I have heard I need to put S.C.A.'s (supp.coolant additives) in the cooling system. i have never heard of this item before. Anyone out there have an opinion on S.C.A.'s?
Buy the SCA test strips to check the level in the coolant, then add SCA as needed. Very important for the IDI 7.3 motors, if it doesn't have the correct amount of SCA, cavitation can (and with no SCA present, will) occur.
I had to go to an International dealership to find them. Regular auto parts stores just gave me that blank look. Although any diesel shop might sell ya some.
any good diesel shop will have coolant test strips.
and pretty muck all farm tractor dealer parts departments have them too.
i use NAPA autoparts NAPA-KOOL brand SCA's in my IDI diesels.
too much hassle involved.the test strips expire and if your mistakenly overdose the system it not only doesn't do it's job but turns to sludge and clogs up the coolant system.......there's got to be a better way!
and there is.simply flush the system.pour in 50/50 fleetcharge/distilled water.install a penray need release coolant filter and just swap out the filter every 15 months.the filter will release the SCA's only as the system needs it and you don't have to worry about buying test strips that expire long before you get to use all of them, and never risk making a mess with liquid sca's.
