I'm sure this is elementary to most of you but it's chinese to me. When an engine is a 360 or a 409 or a 302 or whatever, what does that mean?
Also, if Ford has, for example, a 360 engine, might they have 2 or 3 different versions or configurations or whatever of that 360?
Once they have a 360, for example, do they keep the blueprints and go on to make other sizes until they have a stable of all different sizes of engines and then reuse the designs in different cars in different years as they see fit? How do they decide which to use?
I hope this doesn't bring down the level of the discussion but it is important to me and it might give you all a chance to show off your knowledge.
Dunno much about the other stuff, but I can answer your first question.. A 302 (and all the others) is called that because that is the displacement (302 cubic inches).
