New lifter failed/collasped..Need some advice

Just got truck running Saturday, and was running well....that is until 4pm today. Drove fine for a 40 mile trip and had to wait on the wife. 45 mins later, get to the movies, put truck in park, and here a distinct tap.

Finally limp truck home at 55mph, power down, and can feel it getting sluggish just before home.
Once I get it home, I get driver side valve cover off, and find #8 Exhaust rocker has no pressure. It's bolted tight, so no mistake there. Pull the roxkert to find the top of the pushrod beaten in. Shavings in the pedestal channel.

Drain brand NEW oil. It's spotless, no metal or shaving or anything in it.

Looks like the damage is just a collasped lifter. I went through every lifter before installing them. They soaked in oil for a WEEK.

What are the best options-short of even thinking of pulling the engine!

Thanks for any and ALL help!

I'd just replace the lifter... probably just got a bad one.

What year? Roller or mechanical lifter?

#8 Exhaust rocker is last or next to last stop on the oil passage to that part of the head. Think I'd look for obstruction before throwing another lifter & PR at it just to fail.

Maybe prime before start up with VC off just to see if oil is getting there.

Thanks for the advice guys!

It's a flat tappet lifter. I went through each lifter meticulous, ensure they were clean and the check ***** and metering discs were clean and working. I primed everyone of them.

Gonna have to wait a few days before I can get it t done. I will look carefully at the cam lobe and the remaining ones. I'll update as I get into it!!

Checking oil pressure is a good idea too.

Oil pressure was fine, from break in to failure.

It's the oddest thing I have ever encountered. 50+ psi on startup and maintained 35psi HOT, with Max AC on and fan running on high. That was also with 93°F yesterday.

So far, haven't gotten the lower off. But plan to tomorrow morning after I get off from work. Will update hopefully in the morning.

Do you have an oil pump primer?

I got the lower off. Pulled lifter. It looks OK, as no damage to the cam lobe. The lifter is solid. Won't budge. It's primed completely. The snap ring is a bit crooked, but I will have to tear into the lifter to see what the failure was.

Next is the cam lobe... Fingers crossed!!

Read something about issues removing preload from lifters causing them to lock up like a solid.

In the archives under "bent pushrods" I believe.

I'm lost why the failure occurred. I broke the new lifters in as normal, revving the engine up to 2500 rpm and back and forth from 1800 and 2000. Just like breaking in a new cam.

Why would it lock up solid or why the failure? Unless something caused a blockage where it could unload. Maybe the pushrod was soft on the ball tip, I haven't a clue.

Anyway...I will inspect further. I had a chance to see the cam lobe, and there is shadow on it, so it looks and appears "OK"!

Ok..got the lifter apart.

What I noticed is the snap ring was crooked. Then as I went to pop it out, it jammed as pressure was forced up. I literally had to get needle nose pliers and yank on it. It wasn't easy.

At this point, the lifter cup was still solid. I popped it out and the lifter plunger was solid..wtf!!

After everything, I can't say why this lifter failed!!!??? No debris or blockage. I wonder if the snap ring caused all the trouble as it may have caused the lifter cup to jam in the recess of the lifter body and so therefore could not be depressed.

Next dumb question...
If priming them with a drill, if a few don't show oil after 25-30 psi, are those lifter's bad? Or is it necessary to turn the engine over and do if again to ensure?

Thanks guys for all the advice and help!!

You should be able to get oil bleeding down the rockers. The lifters are designed to pump oil regardless of engine position, so if you don't get oil at rockers there's some investigating to do.

Yes, you should have oil percolating out of the push rod & through the rocker tip on ALL rockers regardless of crank position.
