6.4l Programmers - tunes etc...

ok so I've dug around and I've investigated. I am confused with the programmer and tunes from different manufactures. of course I would like the mini max but I really don't need the gauges and all the other bells and whistles. all I really need is something to delete all the bad stuff and let me then change out the pipes and BOOYA! donesky.... BUT... I have read that there are many issues with the cheaper programmer's and tunes like everything goes well motor wise but then you blow out your trans because it tweaked the way something happened and the trans wasn't informed it needed to adjust. Sooo does anyone have a good, reputable, programmer / tune they used that didn't require a $1600 programmer that ended up in a drawer in the house? I understand you get what you pay for but if I don't have to I don't want to spend an extra $800 on something I don't need.

The two best and most reputable tuners for the 6.4 are H&S and Spartan. Any other good tunes on these trucks will be found at a custom diesel shop that will have custom tunes and they dont take those tunes lightly they like to charge arms and legs for those setups.

The best and easiest way to program thee trucks is going to be H&S and Spartan like i said. They both give you the ability to monitor gauges and clear trouble codes. H&S tunes the transmission alos. I dont know as much about Spartan hopefully someone will chime in for you.

I don't know very much about all that stuff either... I have the Mini Maxx in mine. H&S also has a tuner that has the same tunes as the Mini Maxx but without the gauges. What's it called??... XRT Pro, is that right?

A good friend of mine had one of those in his 6.4L. But I cannot ask him details as he's no longer with us...

Yes the XRT Pro is the H&S with no gauge functions. I have never used one as i have the Black Maxx, but it has the same tunes as the mini and black maxx's.

Sorry about your friend.

I have a Livewire with tunes from Innovative and gearhead which are very well known in the industry and think they are extremely affordable , a lot of people get sucked into the smoke and mirrors with the tuners on the market but thats my first hand experience.

I'm running the H&S Minimaxx. Honestly, the $1600 was painful at first, but I've skimped on tuners on previous trucks and regretted it. The H&S is really nice. Not to mention other programmers cause other issues such as needing DPF sensors attached. I know there are work arounds, but it is nice to just get an exhaust without bungs and pull all of that old garbage off. I'd say spend the money and be done. Spartan or H&S are both great. I have several friends with the Spartan. Just my $.02.

Try buying a used tuner to save some $$. I bought my Spartan used. With relicensing and tuner was under 1k.

Spartan and H&S are ready to go and have been proven by a lot of people already. IF you go with something like SCT then you want to make sure you get custom tunes by someone reputable like Innovative or gearhead.
Of course all this depends on what you want from a tuner. If you just want to remove the DPF and arent really looking for other gains then there are cheaper options. But if you want power, trans tuning, safety limits, monitoring ability (always smart when towing) then you really need to spend the money for Spartan or H&S.

I don't have any experience with other tuners, but I started using the Spartan nDash about a month ago and I don't have any regrets. I like how you can customize what information it shows/monitors/logs and it has a code reader function. That's helpful, to me at least, because after monkeying around with things (DPF EGR delete), it's nice to be able to monitor the truck more closely than the dash gauges will allow for.

Glad to hear you are happy with it. We spent a lot of time making sure that monitoring and datalogging on the 6.4L encompassed all, and not just some, of both the necessary and simply helpful parameters.

Hi Everyone, I've been reading about the 6.4 DPF Delete option with programing and tuning via tuners, etc. I have an 08 F350 Super Duty DRW with 81K miles on it. Just purchased it about 3 weeks ago. But here's my problem - unfortunately I live in the socialist state of California and on Spartan's website, there products are "Not for sale or use on any pollution controlled vehicle, or in the state of California." I've seen that Edge Products have their Evolution CTS2 CA version for sale. Is there anyone also in CA that uses a tuner/programmer to give them better mpg's, and better towing and hopefully, just hopefully can get by going the DPF Delete route?
