'56 F600 Steering Box in a '56 F100

Just finished installing an F600 steering box in my '56 F100. This is an easy improvement (if you can find one) and the box though about 25% physically larger than the stock box, will fit even with the full size FL-1A oil filter on a Y block.

The mounting flange fits in the frame channel, and two holes need to be drilled (I did one in the frame and the other though the flange) but it's quite easy to do since one of the holes lines up just right after the box is in and the stock column is in position. The stock F100 pitman arm is used too.

The steering is much easier, (no not like power steering), and it looks essentially stock. If you are tired of nursing those weak F-100 steering boxes from this era, and don't want to go with power steering, I highly recommend this conversion. The truck really steers well now, and the old box was still pretty tight, so maybe it's the size of the parts or something.

Doing this finally gave me a good opportunity to fix the worn out turn signal switch and get the horn working properly too!

I think I've seen that steering box before. I love doing this swap. I sold you my last 56 big box and I just happen to get another one last week. I'm going to keep it for myself.

I put one in a 55 last fall and I love it. Just feels "tighter and more responsive"

I thought you might see this Kevin. It did take me a few months to clear the schedule to finally do the swap, but it worked out very well! Thanks!

It appears you retained the '3 on the tree' linkage with the steering box swap. Did you transfer the column sleeve and linkage assembly from the F100 box, or move the linkage from the 100 column to the big truck column?

Im thinking a better swap would be the Coe steering box so you can ad power steering.

When I do these I swap over the column tube and shift linkage from the f100 box to the f600 box. I'm fairly sure Steve did it this way since I only sold him the box with the steering shaft.

COE box is not even close to a direct bolt in as this swap is, but when you do a coe swap let us know how it goes

I used the f100 column tube and shift linkage. The overall length and diameter of the shaft for the f600 box is the same, so it swaps right over.

What type of vehicle did your f600 steering box come out of? We have a 1956 ford f100 that needs a new steering box. We have found a donner vehicle that is down the street and wondering what type of vehicle you got yours out of. We are stuck and need some help.

Thank you for your time

The box Steve used was supplied by me. I removed the box from a 56 F600

You can do the same thing with a F350 box, box fits in where the old one was. One hole lines up perfectly, another one has to be drilled and the third has to be elongated. Did this on my 56 F100 back in the 80s never had a problem.
