Hey all, i got some flowtech headers for my 67 merc m100 4x4. Im installing them on the 352 V8 its got. Has anyone done this in their fords/mercs? 4x4 headers are a little different from 2wd. Wondering how install is for the 4x4's. Im hearing the starter has to be pulled but if it can be done without doing so that'd be cool to. Right now the heads are off the engine. If anyone has some tips that'd be great.
The right side is gonna be a pain in the azz.. gotta disconnect the right engine insulator, mount, maybe even the perch, cuz two tubes go forward of the motor mount.
The left side gets real close to the driveshaft... be mindful of how the collector flange is clocked. I bet it'll clear by less than a 1/2-inch.
Do you think maybe because the heads are off right now, that it may help with some wiggle room?
The left side is easy. There is no escaping the headache on the passenger side. Oh, it's easier to install without the starter installed but then it's is a total pain to reinstall the starter afterwards. After my experience with long tubes, I decided on 3/4-length headers from Sanderson because I didn't want deal with it ever again.
Btw, I suggest generous use of anti-seize on the header bolt threads. Better yet, use Stage 8 locking hardware or use safety wire to keep the header bolts from backing out.
Lastly, Remflex exhaust gaskets are typically recommended due to their thickness.
The right header tube fits on both sides of the perch mount. So you'll have to drop the perch. I don't thin k you could jack up the motor high enough to slide the pipes by the perch mount. I put my long tube headers into place while lowering the engine into place. They were 16 ga. and lasted 20 yrs. and did not trap the starter like many of todays header do. Change out the header gaskets about every 5 yrs. I checked the bolts for looseness at every oil change and never had any issues with them getting loose.
You better wrap you starter with a heat blanket now as you may find that you can't remove the starter with the header bolted up into place.
Or get a mini starter now and be a head of the game..

As others said, you can't install the headers without jacking the engine up. And thanks HIO Silver, now I know why my 67 Highboy didn't have a front driveshaft when I got it haha.
So i managed to install the headers WITHOUT jacking the engine up. All i did was remove the starter and it went right in. both sides werent a big deal.
Tell us how you got the right (passenger) header installed without jacking the engine or pulling the right side perch or mount. I'm asking because that style header locates two primaries forward of the perch and two behind it.
The header is a 2 peice header. It comes apart where the 4 ports come down to 1. 2 of the ports can be removed, and u cut the headers flange in between the 2 center ports as its made to be cut. Slide the rear half in, then the front, then install the starter and reconnect the ports at the bottom. done.
Fits all FE engines. Ordered mine off tdotperformance.ca but thats canadian. Can also be ordered from many sites in the states. Love the sound and look of these headers.
