Intake manifold runner control stuck closed is the code i'm getting. Today I had a new IMRC put on by Ford, cleared the code and it came back..what else could cause this code? Kinda of stumped on this one. Also I'm getting a sputtering on start up and the gas pedal is barley pressed. I replaced the throttle body sensor and it continues to happen. Any help would be great. Thanks
The IMRC has nothing to do with the throttle body, it's an actuator which opens a set of butterfly valves, effectively "enabling" a second set of intake ports to allow more air to the engine. Usually these actuators are pretty reliable, but the linkage can get caught up on wires or other stuff back in there. I recently replaced mine, but when taking it off and testing it by running a Key On Engine Off (KOEO) self test using FORScan on Windows I found that the original actuator worked just fine, but the new one did move faster. I did replace it anyway, figure a new part is better than an old one. You have to remove the intake manifold in order to get access to the linkage and actuator, but if you remove the air filter box, you can squeeze your hands in back there and try to feel with your fingers if the linkage is caught on some wires or something. There's 4 plugs in the back plus a vacuum hose on the bottom of the plenum on drivers side. The plugs are knock 1 and 2, cylinder head temp and the IMRC actuator.
Sorry I kind of posted two problems in one. But that actuator is what Ford just replaced today, I would assume they have done it right and its not getting caught. But after clearing the code it came back within 20min saying that "Intake manifold runner control stuck closed bank 1"
Well, when I did mine, I installed it, verified the function and bolted the manifold back on, after which when testing the error came back. Then I squeezed my hands back there and held my hands on it when running the test, and I felt it move but was caught on a wire, after freeing it up and moving that wire out of the way, it worked fine. If you have a scan tool, try downloading FORScan for Windows, it's free, and run the KOEO test while holding your hand on it to feel if it tries to move.
