DEF sensors stranded

I had my 2011 diesel shutdown in 60 seconds in Feb. Minus 21 and in the boonies. Luckily I had cell and called a tow to nearest town. Ford fixed it and cost me $178. My tow I used CAA service. Got a notice in the mail recently that Ford extended the warranty for DEF sensors (I was well over the mileage) for customers to Nov. 15, 2015 regardless of mileage. So sent it in and got reimbursed the $178. I was without a vehicle though for four days as a long weekend.

I heard a Ford truck shutdown crossing the dessert with a family and 5 horses with the 60 second warning to shutdown. That could be dangerous.

Anyway, glad I got some reimbursement but worrisome that a $70 grand truck can shutdown with such little notice.

Glad you got reimbursed and I remember your thread on the shutdown.

yes, it is scary. It *almost* makes me want to delete the whole damn thing because of that. Almost.

Actually the extended coverage is for the EGT (exhaust gas temperature) sensors. I am sure you knew what you meant... wrong acronym.

We hear a lot about the shut downs. They are not good and no ones wants one.

but since 2008 model year this has been a possibility for the EGT sensors.

I have never had a shut down in over 7 years with this technology. I have to believe it is pretty reliable as well.

You are lucky for sure. I think there are four sensors in the exhaust for the DEF. And my 2011 already had a DEF pump failure before that last fall. That was over $900 to replace and not covered by warranty. My big concern is how fast the truck can shutdown without any warning before that. Going off the beaten path or in climate weather really is a danger to anyone in the vehicle. I was lucky I had cell reception as I was on a very back highway and with those temps the truck interior cooled real quick even with blankets. Could cause a death.

Some speculation that the recent recall to update the pcm might prove to prevent a shut down.

Did you get the recent update?

you can do a DEF / EGT delete for about 1100 yourself and that with the cost of DEF and your repair I would think you be money ahead soon
