A little something for Independence Day

We've needed something to break up the big boring garden shed wall. Never quite figured out what I wanted, then with Independence Day approaching this popped to mind.

I googled up some clipart, scaled the image to a size that would work at 1/8th scale, and printed it out on 1/8" graph paper.

Transferred that to 1" squares on the wall, for the full scale sketch.

Started out with a couple coats of pure white, exterior semi-gloss paint. Just the normal house trim painting stuff. Still needs the second coat here.

Next day, cut out a bunch of stars on blue painters tape, and went to work with the blue.

So far, so good. Gave that a day to bake in the sun. It's a south facing wall, so it gets plenty of sun.

Red comes last. Had to do a bunch more layout over the white background. A good sash brush worked great.

My assistant has gotten bored by this point.

Almost there now. But the red needs 2 coats. A tiny little foam roller worked pretty fast on the second one.

Ready for inspection Sir! Bocephus seems to approve.

I think one can't help but worry about the future of our flag.
I'm trying to be as positive as I can.
God bless America.

A few weeks back we had a flag retirement ceremony at a Scout campfire @ Corriganville. That flag was about 15 x 25' dimensions, took a while to cut the star field and top stripes out of it to burn. Sang vespers afterwards. Those boys were impressed! There is hope yet.

Why would you burn a flag at a scouting event?

Because it's the proper way to dispose of a badly soiled, faded, or tattered flag.

The Scouts have a dedicated ceremony to retire a flag.

Though it's rare, it's how I get rid of any I come across that are in those conditions. I give it to the Scouts to retire.

Exactly right, Pop. It is the proper and respectful way to retire a flag.

We fly a flag every day at the Pounds Compound. And they only last a year or so before they start looking sad and disrespectful, in my eyes. So the old ones do pile up around home after a while.
