So clearly the turbo is coming out of the truck, can anyone advise me on next steps ? I have never pulled a turbo apart, from what I read it does not look overly complex but I have been known to get in over my head.

Next steps anyone ?

The truck is going to have to sit for a bit as I have a long work trip coming up.

Thanks

Here are some good instructions, it looks like your turbo is toast but I'm no expert on the internals of them. These turbos come out in no time and are an easy reinstall, get your oing kits ordered ahead of time too! Bob at Diesel Orings can get you parts quickly as well as Clay at Riff Raff Diesel Performance, their sites are listed below.

I know the air only flows one way on these things, I hate to think what else could be affected by the metal particulates flowing into your engine...

Yeah seeing that is a bit concerning, hoping that the shards of metal were directed into the intercooler first, i have seen mention of that.

I have no idea what could have gotten in there or how, but we will see where things go.

I will report findings once we get things apart.

If the shaft doesn't have play, it had to ingest something. The big question is what was it, and where is it now . . .

In my brief stint at an International Dealer, as a Low Man On Totem (Service Monkey/Lube Guy), I helped with tearing down a truck that came in with the turbo compressor wheel coming apart. MANY pieces were in the intercooler plumbing. I was told " Josh Kebosh (Shop Name) , Do you see all those pieces of metal in there??....they all must come out or this guy will be back for your ***." Nuff said. I would guess, you are in for a rebuild kit on yours....looks like a cyborg bumble bee did it's best to chew up your wheel....LOL. As others have implied, I would guess there is more wrong with the turbo at this point. And where oh where did the metal parts go?
During the last month we have replaced two turbos on the same 7.3 SD DRW truck. I can guess that the leftover pieces from our exhaust side of the first turbo-splosion , that were not cleaned out, were not the cause of the second Mega-turbo-spolsion, but they will cause issues somewhere down the line. When the new guy, that changed the first turbo out, that we are trying out for repairs on the work trucks says..." I wonder if there were some debris left in the intercooler?..." , You get a sinking feeling in your stomach. Do a thorough cleaning of everything associated with the turbo. - Side Note, I am guessing that our second turbo went because we placed a used turbo into service and Murphy came for a visit.
One good sign that the turbo has given up the ghost is when LARGE quantities of your precious Rotella T6 is being turned into a mist.....that collects on the windshields of all who are unlucky enough to be behind the truck on the Michigan Interstate.

Well as for the intake, it is stock Ford OEM, although I think I may try something different after this.

I am also wondering if ever getting all of the parts out of the intercooler is even an option ? Or does this also become an intercooler replacement ?

We drove the truck back to the house after this and it is not smoking, using oil or doing anything bad, just zero power

Now that we have pretty clear evidence that the turbo is gone, at best just the wheel, at worst the entire turbo... Either way it needs to be replaced.

Does anyone here have any best practice ideas on how and what I should do to go about finding as much of the blown apart wheel as I can ?

Seems many people think most of the debris will have been transported to the intercooler and would have a hard time leaving there, can you blow / flush out an intercooler ? Does anyone have an idea how or have you done this ?

I have heard mentions of screens somewhere in the intake track ? Is this true if so where are they ?

Never had this kind of issue so this is all new to me, thanks

There are no screens. Anything that can get thru the intercooler likely already has.
You can flush it if it makes you feel better. You could even look inside the cooler with one of those fancy cameras. In big rigs, when a turbo lets go, they replace the turbo and send it down the road.

Thanks HD, it's 16 year old farm truck with 300K on it so, I'll take a look for anything blatant, clean what I can and run with it.

In better news, looks like I may have just made a deal for a complete turbo, from a similar 99 truck that had 86K on it and was just wrecked, for about the price of a turbo rebuild kit.

I am still going to open this one up once we get it out, but to get the truck back on the road this looks like a swap in and out and away it goes.

Will report progress once we get it further along, as I hate these threads that just die with no resolution or final outcome.

Thanks

T

There is an "early" and "late" 99 model, and I think the turbo is different. Make sure you get the right turbo. If you can post a pic of your intake spider we can tell you whatcha got.

See if you can get the intercooler too. Using the old one with debris in it seems risky. That said, I bet that big IC makes a pretty good filter.

I think the truck is a late '99 as the build date was 06/99, but you never know.

Here are some pics to help identify.

Thanks All !
