I have around 2-3 grand to spend on my 97' F250 460. Wondering what I should do next. Not currently having any problems with it, nothing to fix. I recently put a flowmaster super 10 muffler on it, but I still would like for it to be a bit louder. Also want to do some relatively small engine improvements. I have been thinking about edelbrock performer rpm heads. Don't know what the performance improvement would be? That would also open up my exhaust a bit, because of the restrictive ports on the stock heads. It will probably need new heads anyways judging that it's around 175,000 miles. I am not looking for a huge power increase, maybe just a little more responsive or a small torque gain.
2.5" dual straight pipes. Now you're at a fork in the road, do you want to stay fuel injected or go carb? Fuel injected performance for the 460 is pricey and few and far between but it can be done. For either build invest in a high volume oil pump. If you want to stay fuel injected get bigger exhaust, headers, a bigger cam, upgrade the upper end of your valvetrain. Then set the rest of your money back and wait for funds to build enough for some SCJ heads. If carb, heads, cam, exhaust, intake and bigger carb.
I think I would like to keep it fuel injected for now. I have thought about switching it to carb, but I think the current fuel injection system will be fine for the kind of mods i will do. I am thinking I will do headers, larger size pipe, cut off cats and get another super 10 for the exhaust. I have read on a few websites that camming a 460 built after the smog days is pointless unless you get new heads. Because the exhaust ports are so small, it will only drain power. I think I will stick with the exhaust work for awhile. Maybe when I have a bit more saved up I will consider switching to carbureted and putting new heads on. Thanks for the reply.
