1998 Explorer 5.0 AWD
I already daily drive a 2013 impala, but for $1000 you can beat this deal.
Two months ago he put on new Michelin mud snows and fixed something with the front left suspension. Bill was around $900!
Its got 216K miles but has always had most of the preventative maint done. I know because Ive rode around in it since 2008 when he got it.
Only a few issues:
1. The engine is "clicking" very noticeable, but it's got power to go to at least 100 MPH so I dont know if its serious.
2. Some of the O2 sensors need to be replaced as evidenced by the CEL light.
3. A/C compressor is busted, at least thats what I remember from 2008 when it was diagnosed. A/C does not work currently. Doesnt need to be fixed but hey, if I can get a compressor cheap why not.
I can change alternators and throttle bodies along with oil changes and other prevent. manint.
Im not getting to far in over my head am I?
I have basic tools at my disposal but can get more if I really have to.
Trying to do all the repairs myself, needed a winter beater/going to the gun range car(trail is pretty bad, impala bottoms out).
Im selling a nice gun(Springfield M1 Garand) for this car so it needs to be worth it! Im 22 and know this can become a money pit but maybe I will pick up some mechanical skills and save some money doing it myself.
Thanks!
The clicking or ticking might be a hydraulic lifter, or an exhaust leak. See if you can track it down.
Your trans should be the 4R70W. Pretty good, but like all electronically controlled transmissions, it will be expensive to replace if it dies on you. So check that fluid, consider a fluid change out with new filter, and consider not running the whiz out of it as well.
Good luck with it.

Thanks for the response, yeah we only had it near/at 100 mph to make sure it still had some power left in it.
Got a new K&N air filter, platinum OEM plugs, sparkplug wires, fuel filter, seafoam, fuel treatment and wiper blades.
So its in a for a major tune up, might change the trans fluid. I dont know if its got a trans fluid cooler but its got the tow package.
Hes never once towed with it since hes had it so maybe thats why the trans is still strong.
I think its the exhaust manifold thats making the clicking, gonna look into replacing that gasket.
The O2 sensors code is gone but now an EVAP code(P0455) is present, might have to do with that fact he is using a generic fuel cap. Lost it a month ago.
Hopefully ill have it running like new here in a week or two.
