I have a 2001 F250 with 5.4 V8 Gas. When I tow my camper, I can go about 100 - 130 miles before I need to start looking for gas. I cannot stand that range, so I want to increase the range. There are plenty of options for diesel. What options do I have that is reasonable? I saw a tank that cost close to 2K and it replaces my stock tank, but that is not worth it. Is there any other reasonable option?
Have you looked into the aftermarket "saddle" tanks? I had one on my old Dodge Powerwagon, which helped a lot since it got 6 mpg unloaded.
Found this one, it's not an additional saddle tank, it replaces your stock tank. 55 Gallon. It's $945 I think.

That tank is for diesel only according to their list.

Titan Fuel tanks are for diesel only.
I have to take a close look at the Excursion Tank swap. I have never done the scope of that work, but it may be something I can do.
What is that like 5mpg?? Worst I ever got with my 05 V10 F350 towing a 10,000 travel trailer and 2 quads in the bed was 6.7mpg. That was uphill all the way as well.

Big difference between V10 and V8. I had V10, and it stayed in OD most of the time. With my V8, it stayed in the 2nd gear most of the time in Texas hill country. The only reason I have V8 now is because I totaled my V10 truck on black ice.
I was not able to find another V10 in my price range, so I went with this truck.FTE Stories

20' trailer against a 40 mph head wind on I-80 heading into Reno I managed 5.5 and between towns ran out of gasoline.Originally Posted by V10man

The tow service charged $200 to bring out 5 gallons of gas.

What gears do you have in the rear end? Have you updated to the SPD y pipe? Is your truck a short or long box?
I've only seen the tanks as you describe. In the $2k range. And they're only painted steel.
One member, rvpuller, did an interesting hookup for extra fuel but it's more based around hauling a 5th wheel camper so it takes up a lot of bed space.
So yes, you're screwed with paying a premium to allow extra fuel. If you frequently travel it may be worth the expense.....

I don't have a welder to do the y pipe thing. Besides, what will that do with the range? I have shortbed and the gear is 3.73.Originally Posted by Bently_Coop

Have you thought about going to a 4.30 gear ratio? Do you have stock size tires? Y pipe is for power and supposedly economy. Was thinking it may help your truck be a little more efficient.

dont know how much help this is, but.... ever though of carrying 4, 5 gallon military gas cans with, they are rectangle so they fit up next to cab nicely. wont be as nice as a bigger tank but would increase range with trailer a while.
Your cheapest option will be an in bed tank option. However even these options will be around $1000 minimum.
A short bed 5.4L is not the best option for towing. Especially with 3.73 gears, which is another $1000 to upgrade (fix).
Would it be possible to take the $1000+ and invest it in a down payment. Possibly with your current truck for trade?
