My shop manual says that my car (V8, 292, 61 Mercury Meteor)
ran on 98 octane originally and that I should retard the timing
to run on lower octane.
Given that the best I can get right now is 92 locally (and it's
calculated using a different formula than in the early '60s I
believe) should I add a can of octane booster to every tank.
That is, does this stuff actually work?
Also, what about lead additives (since all my gas is "lead-free").
I've thought about just mixing in half a tank of 100LL from the
local airport. Plenty of lead and great octane rating. Anyone
tried this with older motors?
That engine should run fine on regular 87 octane with timing set by the book. There is also no need to worry about lead with the low compression involved. Thousands of stock and reasonably hot Y blocks are running just fine as is.
In some cases, yes. However the Y has a high nickel content and seat erosion hasnt been an issue.
Supercharged or other very high hp/compression uses then hardened seats are installed.
