Help! I need an expert!!
I've got a 94 w/ 7.3 diesel and IDI--mechanical injectors. I'm having a Banks sidewinder system put on (intake, turbo, exhaust, trans command).
What more can I do to get additional HP?
Can you convert IDI to DI (Then a chip would work)?
Thanks
To conver to a PSD (Direct Injection) would be very time consuming and expensive because the engine is controlled via a computer. You would be better off just picking up a used PSD and calling it a day.
Now for more power out of your IDI (which btw you can get more power than a stock PSD) your on the right track with the banks system (actually any turbo system). As mentioned turn the fuel up, you will have avail about one complete turn of the fuel rate screw on the injection pump from the stock setting. If you turn it too far you will destroy the pump, but going 270 degrees from stock will boost your power level right up there (trust me I have done it and can lay rubber with The Enterprise). The only thing is with the injection pump jacked way up you will need to keep a close eye on both the water temps and EGT's. Pulling a hill with a load you will be surprised at how fast the temps rise. Keep the EGT's under 1125 or so (sustained) and you'll do fine.
Powershot 2000 has a propane system out for just under $700 bucks that looks very interesting. I know a guy that has one on his IDI and it varies the amount of propane flow according to the boost level - very slick set up if you ask me. He loves it, he pulls a pretty good sized TT fairly easily up the grades. I have driven with him and it just walks right up there without too much trouble. There are many propane systems out there but this is the only I have seen in action and it's also the only one that I'm aware of that varies the level against the boost level.
Another thing to do is loose the muffler, it will increase your power a little not by much now, but the EGT's will run a little cooler as well.
You could always build your own propane system as well. Check out http://members.shaw.ca/k2pilot/Propane%20article.html for information on building your own. Don did a pretty good job on his system.
Enjoy!
