I have a 2001 F-150 with a 4.6L triton. Yesterday the service engine soon" light came on. I took it to my brother, who has a gizmo that will read trouble codes. It read a p0401 (EGR flow insufficient). What do I need to do about this? Where is the EGR valve and sensor on my engine? I am handy enough working on vehicles, but this is the first "modern" vehicle I have owned, all the rest were pre 90's ford rangers (and they were easy enough for me to work on). From what I have read this seems to be a pretty common problem.. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Hi btorear and welcome to FTE
If you do a search in the forum you will find lots of posts about this problem. The most common cause is a bad DPFE sensor. Ford has extended warranty coverage on them because they are so prone to failure. You might want to call your dealer and see if they can do anything for you.

I had the same code po401 I replaced all three EGR components none of them torned off the light. Finally I removed the throttle body and specer and found the egr ports clogged solid. CLeaned the ports code never came back.
