Unhappy HELP!! rear wheel bearing

Hey all...I've run into a little bit of a problem. I can't find out what type of bearing goes in on the rear axle shafts. Mine has two different ones. It has a tapered on one side and a cone and race on the other. I an installing a new shaft on the tapered side and took a used one to a machine shop to have the old bearing pressed off. Well...I called him this morning and he tells me I have the wrong bearing but it's the same type that's on there now. I've looked through my Timken book and there's a listing for 74-83, 3300 lbs axle with a tapered bearing and a 74-83, 3600 lbs axle with another bearing (doesn't say tapered). Now the GRVW on my truck is 3580 lbs. Which listing do I go with???? I need to get this rig back on the road soon too. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

HELP!! rear wheel bearing

All,
To my knowledge, there is only one type of bearing for the half ton F150. It's tapered.

HELP!! rear wheel bearing

there are 2 types of bearings:

1. a tapered bearing and race set

2. a sealed bearing, requires no lubrication

you no doubt have a tapered bearing that should go back in there, it gets lubricated via the rear axle fluid

HELP!! rear wheel bearing

well...I went by the shop and come to find out the axle shaft, while the same 31 spline, had a smaller diameter than what I had. The bearing just fell right over the shaft so that shot that idea out the window. I'm just going to order a set of Superior Axles from summit and leave it at that. No one around here has 4wd shafts in stock or has access to them. I'll set up both shafts with the tapered bearing so they'll both be equal. What a week this has been....
