Hello all. I have an 85 f250 with a 351 that someone has turned into a frankinstine. I went to start it yesterday and the amp meter maxed out and some smoke came out from around the gauge. I shut it off and then lost all power to the cab. I figured the voltage regulator went out so I changed it. All the fuse able links spear to be working but I still have nothing. Any suggestions?
Someone has been messing with the wiring out between the alternator and the starter solenoid. Do you have any diagrams? I would try to get some, and then unwrap the harness between the alternator and the solenoid and start looking for burnt up wiring. There should be a fusible link right at the large stud on the solenoid that goes to the battery +. I bet that one is blown.
While you are working on this thing, take the battery cables off and instead hook a small 10 amp battery charger to the cables and lay them on rags. That way if you make a mistake or something is still wrong, the circuit breaker inside the charger will trip and not burn any more wires in the harness till you get it all worked out.
If the fusible link is good (top left in photo) then you need to check the black wire in the photo. It is the shunt wire and if it has been cut it would cause your problem.
Again, look at the photo, top black wire between the 2 splice points.
After removing about 20 feet of electrical tape, and a little bit of duct tape I found the culprit. The black wire running to the alternator was corroded and maybe a little burnt up just after the splice where the 3 wires go into the one. The amp meter and the dome light bulb appear to be the only casualties. Thank you so much for the great advice, spot on as usual.
